For a business with a storefront, your Google Business Profile brings in more customers than your website does. It is also free, takes an afternoon to set up correctly, and most New York businesses have at least two things wrong with theirs.
Get the address right, which is harder here
New York addresses break the assumptions Google's form was built around. Second floor walk-ups, garden level entrances, suite numbers inside office towers, and buildings whose door is around the corner from their listed street.
Put the suite or floor in the address line where it belongs rather than appending it to your business name. Then use the description and your photos to explain the arrival. A photo of your actual door, taken from the sidewalk, is one of the most useful images you can upload and almost nobody does it.
Storefront or service area, and why it matters
If customers come to you, you are a storefront and your address is public. If you go to them, like most trades, you are a service area business and you hide the address while listing the areas you cover. Getting this wrong is common and it suppresses your visibility.
For service area businesses, list boroughs and neighborhoods you genuinely serve. Claiming all five boroughs when you work out of Staten Island and rarely cross a bridge tends to dilute you everywhere rather than help you anywhere.
Categories decide which searches you appear in
Your primary category does more work than anything else on the profile. Pick the most specific one that fits. Hair salon, barber shop, and beauty salon are separate categories that surface for separate searches, and choosing the vague one costs you.
Add secondary categories for real services you provide, and stop there. Ten loosely related categories confuse the picture and can pull you into results you have no chance of winning.
The details New York businesses get wrong
A short list of things we correct on nearly every profile we take over:
- Holiday hours never set, so the profile says open on Thanksgiving and someone makes the trip.
- Business name stuffed with keywords, which is against the guidelines and can get the listing suspended.
- No photos since the year it opened, when profiles with recent photos consistently perform better.
- Products and services left empty, which is free space to list what you do and what it costs.
- The website link pointing at the homepage when a service page would answer the search better.
Reviews, briefly and honestly
Ask in person, at the moment the customer is happy, and make it easy with a short link. Do not buy them and do not offer discounts for them, both of which violate the guidelines and are easier to spot than people assume.
Reply to all of them, especially the bad ones. A calm, specific reply to a two star review does more for a stranger reading it than the review itself does against you.
Keep your site and your profile in agreement
Same business name, same address format, same hours, same phone or contact method in both places. Search engines cross reference the two, and mismatches are a slow drag on your visibility that never announces itself.
Profile setup is part of every plan we run, and we keep it lined up with the site as things change. The plans are on the pricing page, and there is more on the ranking side in our New York local SEO guide.
